The TR909 Kiowas have been great and a great value at under $100. In the past, I've worn Bates, Wellcos, and Altamas which have been much more expensive. The Kiowas beat most of them in comfort and ventillation. The break in time was relatively short, maybe 1 or 2 days at most. I really like the form fitting shape of these. No more tripping with clumbsy combat boots for me.
I've owned a green pair for military duty for 2+ years and love them. I bought a black pair to replace my worn out Bates Lites boots for civilian police/K-9 work. Have been wearing these daily for about 2 weeks now. Cons: 1) Unlike the green version, the black leather takes about a full day or two to really break in for comfort. 2) The insole is garbage in both pairs...just plain hard and uncomfortable. 3) They're not waterproof at all (but they don't claim to be) Pros: 1) Exceptionally light and low-profile 2) Very comfortable and tennis-shoe like once the insole is replaced with some Dr Scholes. 3) The "heel strap" actually does work to keep your heel in place even if the boot isn't laced. 4) some Camp Dry mostly takes care of the waterproofing part. 5) Toe shines up nice and easy 6) Both have held up great to daily rigors and then some (from ruck marches, to snow, to tracking in the woods, to the weight room, to the office, and of course to spraying/scrubbing out nasty kennels). I really like my Kiowas.
Thes are great for urban patrol, but in the brush with uneven terrian they can be hazardous to wear. Since they are curvatious they do not provide the stability needed to prevent ankle rolling. However, they are very light and very comfortable. If you are enforcing laws in an urban environment, then these are perfect. The price is also great. If you are in a rural environment with a lot of uneven terrian then wear at your own risk!
I have the desert and black version of these boots, and both are very comfortable and durable. I prefer the desert slightly over the black because the sole is slightly thinner giving the boot more like a running shoe feel. Generally, I like lightweight boots so my legs are not spent at the end of the day, these definitely fit the bill. Being in the military I have tested many tactical boots if not nearly all of them and these are one of the most comfortable over the a long period of time.
At this price, its hard to beat this boot. I liked them so much I bought a second pair, black for uniform work and desert tan for training and just hanging around. They're as comfortable as well-worn sneakers. Highly recommend for working professionals and operators.
